What To Do With That Old Detached Garage

Posted on February 26, 2021

Unlike modern homes with attached garages, many homes built in the early 20th century have detached garages in the back yard area. These garages are often smaller than what we expect a garage to be, and many homeowners find themselves at a loss for what to use it for. If you have a detached garage that is too small for your car and aren’t sure what to do with it, read on.

Demolish the Structure

Detached garages are old buildings that generally do not get the same level of attention that the main house does. Homebuyers usually find that they’ve been neglected and left in bad shape. When that’s the case, the best thing to do is exterior demolition Chicago IL. Demolishing the old building gives you a lot of options for the space that gain. You can expand your garden, add a patio or build a shed.

Convert Into a Home Office

Each year, more and more people are working from home. Often, they are finding it difficult to do in their homes, whether from distractions or for lack of space. If it’s in good shape, a detached garage is a great space to convert into a home office. It is separate from your living space, creating the feeling of going to the office, but near enough that you don’t need to factor in a commute.

Turn it Into Living Space

Due to a lack of affordable housing in many municipalities, there is a move to change zoning laws to allow multiple units on one plot of land. Check with your local government to see if you could convert the garage into a rental unit and you could make some extra money.

If your garage is run-down, demolishing it is probably the best option. If you aren’t willing to do that, there are lots of other great options if you think creatively.
