Best Window Coverings for Bathrooms

Putting window treatments in your bathroom can be tricky because you need to take into account lighting, privacy and dampness. There are several options to consider to make your bathroom both attractive and functional.

Shades

Light-filtering shades such as cellular shades Cambridge are a great option for a bathroom that would be too dark with a more traditional curtain. Light-filtering shades let in enough sun to keep the bathroom well-lit without sacrificing privacy. Installing a top-down/bottom-up shade also allows you to control who gets to see what view. Those in the bathroom can still see the blue sky and the treetops while those on the outside can only see the top of your head at most.

Blinds

There are different types of blinds that look nice in the bathroom.  Metal, plastic or faux wood blinds all resist mildew but the more natural-looking the material, the classier look for the bathroom. Blinds can be tilted to let in light but to also keep the room private from those on the outside.

Shutters

Shutters always provide an upscale look to any home, but the wood may be subject to warping or splitting in the humidity of the bathroom. Ask your window covering professional about using a smaller version of outside shutters which are treated to withstand all types of weather conditions.

Glass Blocks

If you have a window in your shower, you may find your window treatment options somewhat limited as the constant splash of water may be enough to degrade any covering. Glass blocks may provide the perfect solution. The blocks act as a window that you can’t see through. The light gets in but the shapes in the shower are too distorted to make out, much like wearing another person’s very high prescription glasses.

Bathroom window treatments can do more than just provide privacy. Choosing the right style can make a big difference to the overall look of the room.…

What Can You Do When Remodeling a Small Bathroom Space?

What Can You Do When Remodeling a Small Bathroom Space?

You want to give your tiny bath a new look, but you are afraid that fitting everything you’d like to see in such a stingy area is not feasible. Remember this. The transformation is probably more than possible if you approach it with equal measures of creativity and good, old-fashioned common sense. What can you do when remodeling a small bathroom space? You can use the most important tool you possess… your brain.

First, take stock of the space available. If you are stripping it down to the bare walls, then figure it that way. If you are leaving basic fixtures in place and doing a cosmetic overhaul instead, figure your available space without the space occupied by the fixtures. A simple way is to sketch the room to scale on a sheet of graph paper. Pencil in what items will be inside the room when you start (if any) and then come up with a layout that makes the most of the space you have.

If you don’t have room for a full tub and shower, then maybe making do with a shower only is a space saving solution. Pencil it in. If you have a vanity but it’s too big, try a pedestal sink instead and pencil that in. You can have shelves over the toilet to hold supplies. So shade that in with your pencil, as well.

Soon a picture will begin to emerge. You can have a new look in that tiny space, you simply have to use your brain and some ingenuity to get there. So, what is the correct response when you ask yourself, “What can you do when remodeling a small bathroom space?” You response should always be, “I should use my head and the space I have and create something wonderful”!…

Why Professional Carpet Cleaning Is So Important

Everybody loves having a fresh, clean home and this should include your carpets. If you find yourself deep cleaning everything in the house, but only giving the floor a quick vacuum, your rugs deserve better. Here are some of the best reasons that a professional carpet cleaning is important.

Removes Tough Stains

Spills happen and coffee, wine, oil and ketchup are some of the most difficult stains to remove. If this happens to you, call your local carpet cleaning Turnersville NJ instead of scrubbing it yourself. The professionals have the right equipment to remove any stain without damaging delicate carpet fibers.

Extends Life of Rugs

To make your carpet last, high-traffic areas need to be vacuumed daily. Dirt and debris accumulate quickly and weigh down your carpet making it look old and matted. A professional cleaning several times a year will pick up the dirt that vacuuming can’t and make your investment last years longer.

Removes Moisture

Humidity and moisture love to settle into your rugs and make them feel sticky. Dampness in carpets also causes smelly odors and could eventually ruin the floor beneath. If your carpet has been the victim of a large spill, flood damage or humid weather, call the experts to clean and renew your rugs.

Lessens Allergies

If you were to get down and look into your carpet with a microscope, you’d find all sorts of fun things like pet dander, dust mites and assorted allergens. These ingredients are a perfect recipe for itching and sneezing. For people with allergies or sensitive skin, professional carpet cleaning should be performed every few months.

The next time you clean your house, pay close attention to the condition of your rugs. Scheduling a professional cleaning will remove stains, moisture, allergens and extend the life of your carpet.

The Characteristics of an Extractor Fan

The Characteristics of an Extractor Fan

When you are remodelling your bathroom, do you need to install an extractor fan? If so, what should you look for? This article explains the basic things you need to know about bathroom extractor fans.

In the UK, building regulations specify that all new kitchens, utility rooms, bathrooms and toilets require you to install an extractor fan. This is also true if you are converting a room in your house to one of the above rooms. As a basic guide, if you install a fan into a kitchen or utility room it should be a 6 inch, or 150mm, fan, and for a bathroom or toilet it should be 4 inch, or 100mm. This measurement refers to the diameter of the spigot, or pipe, that sticks out of the back of the fan.

Once you’ve decided what size fan you need for the room in question, you have lots of choices to make about the functions that the fan will perform. Normally a bathroom fan will be wired into the lighting circuit, so that it goes on and off with the light. It can also be wired into a separate switch. For kitchens, and sometimes utility rooms, a pullcord on the fan itself is used, as the fan isn’t always required whenever you are in the room.

A basic fan will just come on and off as required, but you may, especially in a bathroom or toilet, want a fan with an over-run timer. This means that when you leave the room and turn the fan off, the timer starts, so that the fan continues to run for a pre-set time, usually between 3 and 25 minutes.

In a room where you get lots of condensation, such as a bathroom or showeroom, or a utility room with a tumble dryer, you may want a fan with a humidity sensor, or humidistat. If an extractor fan has a humidistat, then it will turn on automatically when the condensation level in the room reaches a certain level, and go off again when it drops below that level. This will happen even if you haven’t turned the fan on! This feature is particularly useful in a very light room, i.e. one where you don’t always switch the light on, or in a rental property where you want to be certain that the fan is used to prevent build up of damp and mould.

You should also try to get the most powerful extractor fan you can. Building regulations specify a minimum of 6 litres per second for toilets, 15 for bath or showerooms, 30 for utility rooms and 60 litres per second for kitchens. Generally, the more powerful a fan is, the noisier it is, but these days you can get some very quiet ones that are also powerful. Anything around 25dB is basically silent, 35dB is mid-range, and anything above 45dB you will definitely be able to hear!

Finally, if you are installing near water, for …
